Iliotibial Band Syndrome

ITB Band syndrome is characterized by a sharp burning pain localized to the outer knee. This injury is common among long distance runners. The IT band stabilizes the knee while walking and running, moving back and forth over the lateral epicondyle of the femur during each step.

ITB friction syndrome is a condition which describes the rubbing of this band of tissue as it passes over a bony bump on the outside of the knee joint. When this is performed repeatedly or when the band is excessively tight, wear and tear of the band can develop. To heal this damage, the body commences an inflammatory response. This can cause pain at the site of the injury.

Management of this condition includes massage therapy, a detailed analysis of the athlete’s bio-mechanics so the structures at fault can be determined.
