Bicep Brachii Tendinopathy

Biceps tendinopathy refers to inflammation within the tendon which connects the biceps muscle on the front of the upper arm with the shoulder blade. The function of the biceps tendon is to transmit forces produced by the biceps muscle to the shoulder blade so as to produce movement at the shoulder joint. The biceps tendon passes through a narrow groove in the arm bone and the tendon can rub against the edges of the bony groove causing microtears and inflammation.

Management of biceps brachii tendinopathy should be treated with the RICE regime (rest, ice, compression and elevation) and a graduated strengthening programme in more chronic and severe conditions a cortisone injection may be required.
