Shin splints are a term commonly used to describe lower leg pain. More specifically inflammation at the attachment of tendon onto the shin bone. Injury occurs because of overuse when muscles in the lower leg pull on their attachment at the shin. Thus causing bone inflammation of the periosteum (top layer of bone). Tight muscles and abnormal bio-mechanics can increase incidence of injury.
Management should include massage therapy, using the RICE regime (rest, ice, compression and elevation), altering bio-mechanics / footwear and rehabilitation to strengthen and stretch the lower limb.
